Crafts with Nightcat: Nebula Jar
Nightcat, here. It’s Thursday again, which means it’s time for a new craft, and this one is out of this world!
I’m going to show you how to make a super cool homemade Nebula Jar.
What’s a nebula? Well I’ll tell you. A nebula is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases. Or simply: a colorful dust cloud in outer space.
Here’s how you and your family can make your own dazzling cosmic dust!
— Glass jar with lid
— Tempura paint (2-3 colors)
— Cotton balls
Fill 1/3 of jar with water.
Add a few drops of paint to water and mix well.
Add glitter to the mixture.
Stretch out cotton balls and add them to the mixture, filling the bottom of the jar with cotton and pressing them down in the water with a stick.
Fill another 1/3 of the jar with water and add a few drops of contrasting paint. Mix and repeat steps 3-4.
Fill final 1/3 of jar with water and repeat steps 2-4.
Now you have your very own homemade nebula!
To make this craft more of an educational experience, head over to NASA.gov to learn all about nebulae. Then you and your family can discuss the ins and outs of interstellar dust clouds together.
Tell us about your family’s experience making a nebula jar in the comments below. What did the kiddos think? If you enjoyed this craft project, next Thursday I’ll bring you more Crafts with Nightcat!
