Recently, Adventures with Callie got to chat with Courtney Buteau.
Adventures with Callie: We love the parenting advice you offer on The Mod Mommy! Tell us more about yourself and your blog.
Courtney Buteau: Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m a mom to three young kids, ages 5, 3 and 2. I’ve been a journalist for 12 years and having my blog has been a great outlet for me to document moments and share learned tips with other parents. My blog offers a small glimpse into the crafting, cooking and fun areas of my life. I really love to be in the kitchen and would love to host a cooking show. Although, if I starred in one today it would be called “Chicken Nuggets and Fries.” My kids really need to broaden their palates before I aim for the big time! 🙂
AWC: What inspired you to create The Mod Mommy?
CB: I started The Mod Mommy soon after I had my first child in 2010. As a new mom I was turning to blogs and parenting websites for advice, reviews and connections to other parents. And I found myself learning tips or hacks through my own experiences and craved an outlet to spread the word. Having the blog has been a great way to meet people and share ideas.
AWC: Do you have any go-to tips for traveling with kids and pets you can share with us?
CB: When we took our first family road trip with our beloved 8-year-old Lhasa Poo last month, I scoped out pit stops that we could make along the way that were good for our dog and the kids. I wanted to make sure the dog had room to walk and the kids had space to shake their wiggles out. Another tip is to always have snacks on hand. When traveling, you don’t know when you’ll end up in traffic or when bad weather will hit, so you definitely want to be prepared. I swear, my kids eat All. Day. Long.
AWC: Do you have an anecdote about an unusual experience that inspired a blog post? Please share!
CB: Right before I had my third child I wrote a post sharing random baby tips for new moms. At the time, I was receiving a bunch of unsolicited advice from strangers so that was the inspiration behind it. One of my tips included: Use a leftover baby formula scoop for measuring coffee grinds. It’s exactly a tablespoon and will make a perfect cup of joe! There’s some fun and informative ones on the list and the reception from other moms went really well. Posts that a lot of people can connect with are always fun to write.
AWC: What do you hope to achieve with your blog in the near future? In the long term?
CB: I had set a goal more than a year ago to make sure I made a certain amount of money monthly, and since then I’ve been able to sustain it. My hope is I can continue monetizing while doing something I love. It’s not easy though, as I do everything for the blog by myself. Anyone with kids knows some days it’s tough to get a shower in. So, as I get even busier, I hope to hire some help.
AWC: What’s your family’s favorite summer activity?
CB: Our family’s favorite summer activity is going to the beach. It offers a little something for everyone. My boys love to build and dig, my daughter swims like a fish and my husband and I always like to explore and take walks, so the beach is a natural fit that we all enjoy.
AWC: What do you wish other people knew about The Mod Mommy? Is there something that surprises most when they first learn about your blog?
CB: They are always surprised to hear that I make money from my blog. Too many people look at blogs like silly hobbies. The truth is, it may have started as a hobby, but it’s more than that now. I take pride in my writing, brands I hand pick for sponsored content, my photos and attention to detail. There are many who do what I do, but I’m glad I’m able to contribute to my family’s income while doing something I started and have sustained.
AWC: Here’s a silly one. If you and your family had to be stranded on a deserted island, but all your human needs (such as food and water) were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?
CB: Hmmmm, that’s a tough one! Definitely a bra. Seriously! I feel like not being tucked in would distract me from having fun on island adventures. I’d also want a notebook and pen. Can that count as one thing? Haha I love to make lists and write things down. I feel like that would be helpful considering how easy it would be to lose track of time.
AWC: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
CB: Thanks for highlighting my blog, it’s been an honor to be included! It’s not usually easy to talk about myself, but you made these questions fun to answer.
