Recently, Adventures with Callie got to chat with Becky Mansfield.

Adventures with Callie: We love the lifestyle advice you offer on Your Modern Family! Tell us more about yourself and the blog.

Becky Mansfield: My husband and I have four children and we are raising them in North Carolina. I was a teacher and I am currently a play therapist, so I write about parenting and raising children as the primary focus of my blog. I talk about taking care of the house, saving money, cooking and really all things family-friendly. I am the author of several books, including the best-selling Potty Train in a Weekend.

Your Modern Family_Pic3AWC: What inspired you to create Your Modern Family?

Mansfield: It’s funny that it started with a parenting group. I was sitting with my friends and they had asked me for advice on how to organize their home similar to mine. I wrote out a very lengthy email to each one of them when it dawned on me that I should put it in one place for them to come back to every day while they are decluttering and organizing … YourModernFamily.com was born.

AWC: Do you have any go-to tips for traveling with kids you can share with us?

Mansfield: My favorite tip is eliminate all electronics for the week leading up to your trip. This tip works well because when you do finally get into the car to take your long trip, you can give them an electronic device and they will be so excited to play it … They will keep themselves entertained for hours.

Your Modern Family_Pic1AWC: What do you hope to achieve with your blog in the near future? In the long term?

Mansfield: In the near future, I hope for my blog to inspire parents to enjoy the time that they have now, while their children are young. So many of us just look for the future … for that time when our children are older, but we are missing these moments. I want to help them see that the time is now.

For the future: My husband and I both work on YourModernFamily.com from home. We have branched off to include YourModernDad.com, so my hope is that we can continue to add more sites to help more people.

AWC: What’s your favorite family weekend adventure/trip and why?

Mansfield: Definitely going to Hilton Head Island. It is a four hour car ride to the beach, but we mostly love to go there for the biking. Our family loves to spend time together doing things outdoors, but biking is our favorite. HHI offers so many paths, to make this easy for everyone.

AWC: What is your family’s favorite summer activity?

Mansfield: When it is too hot to bike, we usually go boating on the lake with our family. My parents and my brother’s family live close by, so we all get together a few days a week to boat on the lake and swim afterwards. We end the day with a family dinner at my parents’ house. Our kids love it as much as I do, so we try to take advantage of the lake as much as we can.

Your Modern Family_Pic2AWC: What do you wish other people knew about Your Modern Family? Is there something that surprises most when they first learn about your blog?

Mansfield: There are a few things that surprise people. First—that my husband and I are high-school sweethearts. Second, that he has resigned from his job and this blog is our new job. It works out perfectly because we can work after the kids are in bed for the night, so it allows us to have a lot of family time. It is a win-win.

AWC: Here’s a silly one. If you and your family had to be stranded on a deserted island, but all your human needs (such as food and water) were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?

Mansfield: Bug Spray (ant bites are the worst!) and shoes (when I watch those shows where people are stranded without shoes, all that I can think about it how badly their feet must hurt!).
